ENG 104 - Creative Writing: Microstory (Draft Submission #3)
Name of Assignment: Microstory (Draft Submission #3) Subject: Creative Writing Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Wood In this assignment, we made three microstories modeled after three within our reading material, The Wood Models. These three microstories were each focused on a different purpose of storytelling: action, plot, and dialogue. Each story had specific criteria but also allowed for creative thinking and properties. Such as the dialogue story, my personal favorite, which required 80% of it to be dialogue but otherwise could be about anything. Each story requires the protagonist(s) to undergo a conflict (mental, physical, or otherwise). I am proud of the dialogue story from this assignment because Professor Wood gave it the highest praise of the stories. I also liked how it read; it was action-forward and did not overpower the reader with unique words and overdrawn sentences. Professor Wood also stated that my dialogue story sounded like a movie script! The most challenging part of this task was following the criteria without completely copying the original story. I struggled with coming up with a fitting idea for the concept. After I reached that point, I was able to move forward, but if I could not find a suitable visualization, then I could not write a good story. If I were to do this project again, I would redo my first story. It was the first piece of extended writing we attempted in this class. I was becoming too adjusted to poems, leaving me grasping at a skill of creativity I had abandoned for technical and academic writing. I would think harder about making a cohesive story because, although I thought differently then, my first microstory did not have a linear progression or any base. I would make the main idea more apparent because I lost the plot as I drew out my story. This project relates to all the writing classes I have taken in the course about technical skills. However, it took more work to equate academic writing to my creative writing. Creative writing will help me prepare for future classes that require innovative and genuine thinking rather than formulaic processes. The 21st Century Skill this assignment addresses is communication skills because I had to write differently for different audiences and purposes.
