Name of Assignment: Senior Pages Subject: Yearbook Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Getzen
In this assignment, I had to take the rough draft for the senior page, edit it to make it line up, add it to all of the senior pages, and add the senior’s names and photos to the pages. In the yearbook, we use the Herff Jones website to make yearbook designs, which is an older program that struggles with complex actions. It is challenging to move from page to page because pages can only have one editor at a time. Overall, creating the senior pages was frustrating and bothersome, but worth it for the best result.
I am proud of how I stood up to the decisions made in the classroom about the senior pages. Because of our class size, the senior’s page space got demoted from one-half to one-third. I voted against this, and because I brought a logical and factually-supported argument, I could make a change and bring back the half-pages for the seniors! However, this meant that I was responsible for making sure the senior page layout was correct because the yearbook staff had already begun the third senior page. The most challenging part of this task was making the page line up perfectly. If the page didn’t save or the text was one pixel off, I would have to go in another time and make another template. This project relates to art classes I have taken in the past to make the graphic-design aspect of the yearbook as well as learning about the democratic relationship in the yearbook classroom because we are staff working on one project and not students turning in work to a teacher, we have more weigh and say into what happens in the yearbook. I think the 21st Century Skill this assignment addresses is Civic Literacy and Engagement because I engaged the classroom in a discussion where both sides brought up facts to support their arguments, ending with a democratic vote to make the yearbook change.
